In 1988 USS Montana, American nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles, detects some object in the water. First they thought it was natural, later that it could be some sort of Soviet submarine, but when the object exceeded the speed of 120 knots the captain was sure that nothing known to human can go that fast while submerged. The object hits USS Montana and sinks the sub with whole crew. US Navy is worried that Soviets might be on the way to salvage the wreck of Montana, so they sens their own ships in the area. Soon they discover that the only way to reach the wreck fast enough is by using the civilian mining platform that is operating in the area. The crew of the Deep Core platform was contacted and offered double the money they usually get just to take the onboard the squad of SEALs and escort them during the search and rescue mission. The commander of Deep Core, Virgil Brigman, is reluctant to agree, but the crew is keen to get the extra money. Unfortunately upon agreeing he did not know that together with the commandos Dr. Lindsey Brigman will be joining the crew. Lindsey is his soon-to-be ex-wife and the two simply don’t get along. While approaching the wreck they find the whole crew of Montant dead, but also they spot some sort of unknown creatures. While on surface the storm approaches the area, which means that platform will be cut off from any contact, SEALs commander has made the decision (without informing the platform’s crew) of transferring one of the ballistic missile warhead to Deep Core. Soon strange phenomena begin to surround the platform.
Sci fi movie written and directed by James Cameron, deals with the less popular form of alien presence on Earth - deep in the oceans, where even if they exist, only very small part of human kind would be able to contact them and any sort of examination would be very hard. But on many levels the story is very similiar to some of the movies that deal with the space travel - in both cases the vessel used by the crew is the only place where they are safe. And in case of The Abyss we have interesting plot, atmosphere of danger and mystery, but the only thing that fails are characters created - they all seem more like stock characters than actual effect of deeper thought. While watching f.e. Alien movies you’ll find almost identical characters and identical situations on board. But the element of being trapped at the bottom of the sea and the dense atmosphere is something worth to see.
