In year 2500 transport ship Hunter-Gratzner is damaged while passing near the comet tail and the autopilot loses the control. The passengers were in cryostasis chambers when the problems have begun, so while they were released it was already too late to avoid crashing on the surface of nearby planet. Most of the passengers were settlers relocating to new planet, but only few of them have actually survived the impact. Among the survivors there is law enforcement officer William J. Johns and a criminal he was escorting, Richard B. Riddick. Pilot of the ship, Carolyn Fry, tries to get the survivors organized, but the news that Riddick have escaped and is capable of killing them all is quite shock to all of them. Soon they discover that on the planet they will have to deal with not one, but three suns, so finding the water is essential. One of group is killed by some creature that lives underground and is obviously hiding from the light. Fry convinces the others that they have to move and find safer place and the source of water. Luckily for them nearby was a geological research base with supplies of water, but the only thing that is missing are power cells that could restart the emergency dropship. Riddick rejoins the group and explains to survivors that he is not the one they should fear - soon the suns will be eclipsed and the creatures will be able to hunt on the surface. He also thinks they have better chance of survival with him, since his eyes were modified so he can actually see in the dark. They agree to get back to the crash site and bring power cells, but on the way they are attacked.

First of the movies about Riddick, former soldier and mercenary, who travels through different planets and is fugitive for his crimes. Pitch Black is typical survival / horor science fiction film in which group of survivors stuck on the planet filled with vicious creatures has to find the way of surviving without proper tools or weapons, but also they have to keep in mind that darkness on this planet could last many years. It is well written plot that has some interesting twists, good cast and not bad directing created very enjoyable movie.
