Avalon 2001 science fiction film

Running time: 105 minutes

Language: Polish

Avalon is a virtual reality computer game in which players are taking part in the simulated battlefield and fight each other using guns, rockets, grenades and every weapon they can find. The game is illegal, dangerous for the players (they could become catatonic and never come back to the reality), but also could be lucrative for the best players. Ash, young woman, is one of the best players in the game, but she constantly refuses to join any of the group of players - she lives her life alone and plays the game alone simply for the money. Soon new player joins the game and proves to be equally skilled, so Ash tries to find out who he is. Soon she discovers the rumours that there is a higher level of the game, reserved for the elite of the players, where only the best join. Ash begins her investigation to find a way to enter that extra level and face the best of the best.

Unusual production - Japanese movie filmed entirely in Poland and with only Polish actors in the cast. Avalon is set in alternate reality, where the real world outside the game is a gloomy and depressing place and the virtual battlefield in the game could be a ticket to a better life, so players literally risk their lives to play it and earn some money. Avalon is based in the interesting idea (that is pretty close to the modern e-sports reality), not bad plot, but the production was rather cheap and the acting is far from being perfect. Most likely the creators chose Poland to film Avalon because they were allowed to use some of the Polish Army equipment in filming (including armoured vehicles and helicopters). Overall film that was not in any way revolutionary, but original enough to make it worth the time spent on watching it.
