Lena, former US Army soldier, now cellular biology professor, prepares in quarantine conditions for expedition into anomaly known as "the shimmer", surrounded by shining bubble. Previous scientific expedition into the area ended up in disaster - only one soldier, Kane, managed to return a year later, but without recollection what happened while he was inside the anomaly. Kane is Lena’s husband, but after his return from the expedition he became very ill and was taken to the hospital. For Lena this makes her mission more difficult, but at the same time she hopes to find the answer to question what happened to Kane or what can be done to help him. Together with her four other women enter the shimmer, three of them are scientists like her and the last one is paramedic. Lena did not told them that Kane is her husband, hoping to avoid the any questions, but the state of her husband is for her clear indication that anomaly could play tricks with their minds. Just after they enter the area their guidance equipment becomes useless and suddenly they weak up in an improvised camp they do not remember making.

American sci-fi movie set inside anomaly of unknown origin situated in the southern part of United States. Five women enter the area, in which all they can be certain of is that they can’t believe their senses any more. While the concept is quite similar to different productions through the years (from Solaris to Stalker or even Event Horizon) and creators managed to build interesting atmosphere about halfway through the film loses the pace, the scenes become more and more incoherent. It is refreshing to see American production that is not easy to understand and raises more questions that is giving answers, but in case of Annihilation the story behind the story we are watching does not seem to be that interesting or involving as the beginning of the movie would make us hope.
