The Kinloch Bravo oil rig somewhere in the North Sea is preparing for arrival of the helicopters that will take some of the crew members back to land for Christmas. Sudden problem with communications and weather change put extra tension between them, because it looks like some of them might not make it in time. What is more some unusual fog suddenly covers the nearby oil rig belonging to the same company puts the arrival of the helicopters in question. But then suddenly the fog turns into something more sinister - people who walk into the fog begin to see things and one of the crew members falls down on a metal surface from a great height. Surprisingly he did not died due to fall, what is more, with time, he seems to be getting better than expected for someone with such injuries. Then an ash-like material begins to fall on the platform and the crew is forced to hide inside of the buildings. The tensions are rising, but also the danger from a force that seems to try to get rid of them and the platform.

TV series created by John Strickland, whose father worked in oil rigs in the North Sea, which gave him the idea for the setting. While the cast and the premise are interesting, the series unfortunately runs out of steam pretty quickly with introduction of the theory of what is behind the sudden threat. It is a mixture of mystery, science-fiction, drama, but overall the production was described as supernatural eco-thriller, with strong overtones of global warming and ecological ideology. The idea was interesting, but with each episode, especially in the second series, The Rig just wanders into places that are far away from what might have been interesting - instead of people stuck in confined space with something trying to drive them away, the story sinks into corporation in-fights and cover-up stories, which is a huge letdown.
