In 1944 in German-occupied Poland teenage boy Erik Lehnsherr is separated from his parents during the transport to concentration camp. While trying to reach them he somehow manages to bend the metal gates using some invisible power. Decades after the war many other people have noticed strange powers they have, but the ordinary people see them as freaks and threat. Soon the politicians come up with the Mutant Registration Act that would force the people with unusual abilities to reveal their identities. One of such people, 17-year-old Marie, accidentally puts her boyfriend into a coma after kissing him. Affraid of the consequences of her ability to absorb the life force from anyone she touches, she runs away. On the way she meets Logan, a wrestler known as Wolverine, who also possesses superhuman healing abilities. Together they end up in strange mansion run by Professor Charles Xavier, where the "mutants" can feel free and normal among themselves. But this oasis gather attention of the outsiders. Soon they will have to face Erik Lehnsherr, now known as Magneto, who kidnappes Senator Kelly.

Sci fi movie based on the Marvel series of comic books. It is first of the movies about this set of characters - humans with supernatural abilities that make them feared by other people. Impressive special effects are trademark of those productions, but their plots are rather average and, as most of superhero movies that are filmed lately, they are designed rather for young audience rather than different age groups.
