James Cole is one of the criminals that are used in the post-apocalyptic Philadelphia to help scientists. It is year 2035, 40 years after the Earth had been contaminated by a virus so deadly that it forced the survivors to live underground. The scientists are sending criminals to the past using a imprecise time machines hoping to get the informations about the virus that would help to create antidote. The criminals could earn a pardon for their involvement, but the missions are dangerous. So far all they gathered is that organization known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys is responsible for releasing the virus, but they don?t know how it was created and why it was released. Cole is sent back to World War I and few other times before he finds some informations, but unfortunately he ends up in mental institution. He has to find the way to get out and return to his times.

Film based on short movie "La jet?e" by Chris Marker is kept rather close to original. At least up to a point where the Hollywood touch has affected the story and the plot gets complicated and finally boring. Strangely little elements were added to the original story and the final effect is actually worst than original that was only few minutes long. Up to a point it was great movie, but the second part is too long and not very good.
