Douglas Quaid, a construction worker living on Earth, has recurring dreams about being on the surface of Mars. He has no idea why in those dreams he keeps seeing the same, dark-haired woman or where that obsession with Mars came from. Even though he would like to visit Mars, since it has been colonized some time ago, the tensions between the Vilos Cohaagen (in charge of the planet) and the rebels, makes it impossible. But an advertisement Quaid spots while travelling for work, gives him some hope. The company called Rekall offers a chance to travel to a different reality through the implementation of an experience into the brain of the client. Quaid sees this as a chance in a lifetime and visits the office of that company. It seems to be a perfect way to solve his problem - he could see Mars without travelling there, not to mention he could also have some adventures while he is at it. He decides to choose a secret agent profile for his "trip", but while he is being prepared for his procedure. something seems to go wrong. The staff of Rekall realizes that Quaid might have had such operation in the past.

The script was based on a story by Philip K. Dick and it is a quintessence of his style - a man trapped between the dream and the reality and without any tools to tell which is which. The film was one of the most expensive productions of its times, even now that most of the CGI in Total Recall is quite dated, even though the whole outlook and graphic design of the production were not that great, the story seems to be saving Total Recall as a sci-fi classic.
