Three scientists discover that some strange instability is present in Earth?s magnetic fields that causes problems around the world. Their conclusion is that the molten core of the planet has stopped rotating, which means that in about year the magnetic field will cease to exist and the surface of Earth will be exposed on solar radiation. This would mean the end of life on Earth, which means that they have to act fast. The scientists, lead by geologist Dr. Josh Keyes, come up with plan to bore down to the core and set off few nuclear explosion that should restart the rotation. They get in touch with Ed Brazzelton, constructor of vessel called Unobtanium that would be able to withstand the heat and pressure. Unobtanium is quickly installed on construction called Virgil, a multi-compartment vessel that will help the crew on the journey, but it requires special skills to stear Virgil, so two of NASA pilots are added to the crew. Also a hacker called Rat is hired to stop the spreading of any rumours on the Internet about the mission or the core problem. With complete crew Virgil is launched through the Marianas Trench, but soon they drill through gigantic empty geode and damage the laser. While repeairing the equipment the pilot is killed, so less expirienced Major Rebecca Childs will have to take over the Virgil.
One of many science fiction movies presenting the distaster that would destroy the Earth (f.e. Armageddon) or kill all humans (f.e. Armageddon, Deep Impact, The Day After Tomorrow), but The Core is in a way special, it presents something we did not see recreated in such details - what Earth looks like on the inside. Of course the characters are rather one-dimensional, the plot is not very impressive, the dialogues are sometimes really corny, but there is no recent sci fi movie that would show all the things that were presented in The Core - the layers of the planet and how they might look miles below our feet.
