Sam Lowry is a low-level government official, who uses his recurring daydreams as way to escape from the depressing bureaucracy and the life he lives. But one day when police force arrests (which equals to kills) a wrong man Lowry tries to fix the error in the central system he discovers the mistake they made and pays a visit to the widow. The upstairs neighbour of the widow is Jill Layton, who looks exactly like a woman from Lowry?s dreams and from that point his life changes completely.

Soon he is visited by freelance heating engineer (which officially means he is terrorist) Archibald Tuttle and when the official engineers notify the changes Tuttle made in Lowry?s apartment it puts Lowry in suspicion of also being a terrorists supporter. Lowry decides to help Jill and at the same time break every rule he was so far following without questioning them.

Brilliant science fiction movie made in typical for Terry Gilliam gloomy style. The totalitarian state where everyone is a small gear in giant machine of "the system" and a daydreamer, who wants to escape from the reality. Great cast, great style and great effect - it is one of the science movies that is hard to forget.
