Twelve extraterrestrial spaceships arrive to our planet and hover above the ground in different places of the Earth. US Army surrounds the spot in Montana where one of the spaceships have landed and commanding officer, Colonel G.T. Weber, brings two scientists with a very specific role. Linguist Louise Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly are sent to establish contact with the aliens and find out what was the reason behind their arrival. So far the soldiers only managed to receive a response to their hail, but have no idea what the answer could mean. Louise and Ian will enter the spaceship to meet with the aliens, who turn out to be very tall octopus-like creatures with seven legs, so they are called heptapods by the scientists. During the first meeting they try to find a way to communicate, but the human voice and the voices of the aliens have nothing to do with each other, so Louise tries to use words written on the board. Soon they learn that circles of smoke used by the aliens is actually their written language.

American sci-fi movie showing what would be the biggest challenge in case of the contact with alien lifeforms - to find a common communication method. While the film is based on interesting concept and is quite original the creator did not managed to avoid some cliches that spoil the whole production, f.e. they use the "global panic" scenario as the consequence of the arrival of aliens, which makes no sense at all. Another is putting army in charge of the contacts even though they have very little knowledge or experience to supervise such scientific task. The story itself is rather good, but could have been better.
