The thing that everyone on Earth have feared had happened - the another Ice Age has begun and whole world is covered with ice. In year 2714 there are no more deserts, rivers, lakes nor forests - everything is white and cold. The population of survivors remained in the biggest cities, but apart from them there are no settlements or villages. The last things that keeps the people connected are railways and very few trains that transport goods between the cities. Player becomes owner of one of such trains and begins his journey were 200 years earlier was the biggest desert on Earth - Sahara. The network of railways is still pretty much in tact, there are remains of the railway infrastructure, so the train can travel on the vast empty fields of ice. There are several kinds of the stations in the cities - some of them are commercial stations, where player can buy or sell goods (including mammoth dung), there are slave markets, mammoth markets, industrial cities, where new wagon can be bought or just cities, where you can gather informations and gossip about new mines. Of course money are no longer in use - the coal that is used to power the engine is also used for trade, so player has to consider if long travel is good idea since, in a way, each trip means... burning the money.
But that?s just the tip of the iceberg (excuse the pun) called Transarctica - basically it is typical retro game, in which you simply trade the goods by visiting different stations (there were dozens of those), but here you have to consider many aspects of each move. You can buy different kinds of wagons to be attached to your train - each of them has different purpose. Some of them are used to store goods, slaves or mammoths, but other are used to spot hunting opportunities (yes, you can catch mammoths), armed wagons are used for the battle scenes when you are attacked by different train, even the order of the wagons in the train does matter.
Of course since the game is rather old there were limitations for the computers, so graphics nor the complexity of the story can?t be compared to today games, but with interesting idea (inspired by the Georges-Jean Arnaud novels) and style of the game it still can be quite entertaining.
