Duke Nukem 3D was not the first ever first-person shooter (FPS) in history, it wasn’t even first FPS set in 3D graphics, but it still is one of the best in the genre. Of course not the graphic side of the game, nor audio made it a classic, but the most enjoyable gameplay among early FPS games. The story is set on Earth, when alien creatures attack Los Angeles. They have several forms, from cat-like most common creatures to medusa-like floating brains or lizard-like heavy fighters to those really, really annoying.
Who can stop the invasion from space? The one and only Duke Nukem, whose special abilities are... Well... Husky voice I guess and a bit outgoing personality. Apart from that it’s all about guns, guns, rockets, some more guns and pipe bombs. While we start on Earth the game progress the story take our hero moves from Los Angeles to the Moon and finally to alien planet, where he has to stop the invasion at the core.
It is actually quite hard to explain why Duke Nukem 3D gameplay was so enjoyable - there were some simple puzzles to solve (which switch operates which door, how to raise or lower water level, etc), there were alternative routes you can take (usually via air ducts), some hidden weapons or special weapons you had to figure out how to use efficiently (like the shrinker). I guess it was just very well balanced game - you did not had to think to much, but at the same time put some planning in your moves. The levels were sometimes very predictable, but overall Duke Nukem 3D was one of the game that did not left you with much time to consider meaning of life or the background story of Duke Nukem, it was just good, old-fashioned straight shooter.
