In 1957, Windscale nuclear power plant fire covered most of the Lake District, Cumbria in radioactive fallout. This caused evacuation of the inhabitants from the contaminated zone and quarantine established in the area. As an amnesiac, we walk into that area and try to figure out who we are and what exactly had happened in the Windscale nuclear power plant. The place might seem deserted, but it is nothing but empty - there are several factions in the quarantine zone, who try to reach their goals, while we are trying to survive. We have to gather resources and recipes to craft the items we need, we have to search the area for clues and we also have to navigate through a typically British countryside.
Just before the premiere, everyone was asking is Atomfall a British Fallout. The answer to that question is not really. It is similar in a sense that it has nuclear fallout in the background, in a sense that you gather resources and there are factions. Apart from that, the direction of those games are quiet different. The area you walk through is not as hazardous as in Fallout, you mostly will fight other people, not mutants or monsters. Atomfall is more about exploration and solving the smaller and bigger mysteries than about fighting.
The game was based on an engine used in the Sniper Elite series, which means a lot of mechanics are similar (AI used by the NPCs). The atmosphere is not as dark as in case of Fallout or Stalker games, most of the time you walk around a picturesque area and search through abandoned huts and houses, there is no day/night cycle, the weather never changes (typically for Great Britain, right?). The main selling point, being more British than any other post-apocalyptic game, was a refreshing idea, although it could lose its appeal quite quickly.
Overall it is great that Fallout games finally have some real competition from a big studio, but replacing swords with crickets bats and futuristic outlook with English countryside is more a novelty than something that could build a lasting impression on the genre.
