Memory Vortex Wir pamięci 1979 science fiction book

Ira Dogow, a parcel courier on Apostezjon island, is taken home after an operation he had in a hospital. He recalls nothing regarding the accident that made the operation necessary, but the nurse that is assigned to keep him company, tells him it is normal. The famous Professor Marten, who operated on him, drops by to check up and put the patient at ease. After the visit, Ira becomes suspicious. Not only he remembers nothing regarding the accident, but also he cannot find any mention of the accident he had in the news. Professor Marten is a well-known figure, but he is not a surgeon, he is a specialist in a completely different field. What is more, Ira overhears the nurse talking on the phone and calling someone "captain". Meanwhile, four people, hires by an elusive Sponsor, have retrieved data from the hospital Marten works for, and now they are awaiting further orders. In a different part of Apostezjon Matilda is trying to figure out what happened to Albert Wardenson, a person she had a relationship with and who was taken to the hospital to be operated by Professor Marten.

First in the Apostezjon trilogy, Memory Vortex is an introduction to the dystopian reality, in which all the elements of lives are being centrally planned by the Council of Experts. Wnuk-Lipinski, a Polish sociologist, created this world around the concept of what the future world might look like if the communism would reach its goals and built the "perfect society". The parallel threads in this novel show how the same events has completely different meaning depending on the perspective and how flawed the "perfect society" would actually be.
