In 21st century the polar caps have melted, which left the Earth covered with water. Five hundred years later the civilization is limited to small artificial islands built out of scrap metal or parts of vessels. A drifter called Mariner, who owns a trimaran, arrives to one of those islands looking for a chance to trade some dirt, which in the world covered in water is very valuable, since it is the only way to grow plants. Unfortunately for him when the islanders discover that he is a mutant with gills and webbed feet they capture him and plan to turn him into compost. Mariner is saved by the attack of pirates known as Smokers. In the commotion he escapes on his boat taking Helen and her daughter Enola with him. It turns out that this time Smokers did not attacked the island for resources, but they were looking for Enola. Tattoo on the girl’s back supposedly contains a map to Dryland, the mythical place that survived the flooding and is the last place on Earth that is above the sea level. Deacon, leader of the Smokers, is desperate to find the land since his reserve of fuel is running out and without fuel he would not be able to survive in the ocean.
American sci fi movie that is famous for going way over the budget and way over the deadlines. What is more the final result was far from expectations of the viewers - it lacked originality, lacked interesting characters, lacked story development and above all lacked the main idea around which the story should be built. Yes, the Earth is covered with water and everything except salty water is very valuable, but... that’s about it. That’s the whole idea, the story of Mariner is simple, the journey in search of Dryland is simple, the characters are simple and too cartoonish to even be remembered. To put it another way - imagine Mad Max in the middle of the ocean. And you’re done - that’s basically the whole Waterworld.
