Thirty years after nuclear apocalypse a lonesome wanderer travels through wastelands of California. The bare desert left by the war forces people to cope with extremely hard conditions - lack of water, lack of food, overwhelming sunlight that caused some people to lose sight. During his journey the traveler stumbles upon a woman, who seems to be in some sort of troubles, but when he approaches her it turns out she is part of ambush prepared by few thugs, who rob the people naive enough to get involved. But this time they are up for a tough case, because not only the traveler is armed in sword-like weapon, but he is skilled enough to kill all of them without even being scratched. He continues his travel and stumbles upon a remnants of a city, where everything is covered on dust and small group of people just tries to survive under command of charismatic Carnegie. He is a leader of the gang, who controls the city, nothing is going on around here without his knowledge. But Carnegie has a weak point - he is obsessed with finding a book and pressurizes his thugs to find it. Not just any book - after the war people were convinced that Bible was one of the reasons the war has started, so they have burned all the copies. Carnegie is convinced there must be at least a single copy left and is desperate to get his hands on one to use Bible in building the new society. The lone traveler happens to have a copy of Bible, but he will not just give it up.
Set in post-apocalyptic reality The Book of Eli offers mixture of sci-fi and religious motifs, which is intriguing at the beginning, but quickly fades away. Interesting premise to the story is replaced with long scenes and deliberations about the meaning of Bible (some of which make very little sense in the context) and finally it leads to an unusual ending (that also makes very little sense). It is really a shame that the film starts so impressive, but at the end turns out to be an empty shell of a story.
