I, Robot 2004 sci-fi film

Running time: 115 minutes

Language: English

Police officer Del Spooner is obsessed with the evil side of robots, mostly because his father lost the job and whole family was poor due to social revolution that was started by introduction of commercial robots that are able to do the jobs of people. Often Spooner is very suspicious when it comes to robots and modern technology, which gets him in trouble with his superiors. But one day he is assigned to a suspicious death case in the office building of the biggest corporation that manufactures the robots. Dr. Alfred Lanning was leading scientists that are developing the improved robots. His body was found in the head office of the USR corporation and it seems that he has committed suicide, but Spooner also receives a holographic projector in which Lanning left the message that suggests he was murdered. Spooner begins the investigation and from the beginning he suspects that robots that Lanning was working on were in some way involved, which enrages his superior and the CEO of USR.

Film based on (or as the credits descibe it "suggested by book") short story by Isaac Asimov tells the story of what will happen if the robots would be able to break free from their limitations described in Three Laws of Robotics devised by Asimov:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Murder mystery changes into chase behind the possibility of existance of the robots that disobey the Three Rules, but Spooner has to find not only if Lanning did built such robot or robots, but also what could be the consequences.

Film made with a lot of CGI, plenty of fast action sequences and... almost complete lack of content. The mystery quickly fades out, the characters lack the originality and any deeper thought. It was a huge financial success and as a blockbuster for whole family is fine, but as for science fiction movie it is only average.
