Running time: 90 minutes
Spaceship with international crew is sent on scientific expedition to Europa, one of the Jupiterís moon that has whole surface covered with ice. Their goal is to land on Europa and gather samples of the ice and using drilling equipment reach the water beneath the surface. They are hoping to learn more about Europa, but the astronauts as well as the institution that sent them, hoping to find any signs of life on the moon. The travel to Europa went without incidents, but soon before reaching their goal a solar storm damages the communication systems and crew no longer has contact with their mission control. During the repair astronaut James Corrigan dies while saving life of Andrei Blok. This event strikes a huge blow on the crew morale, but they try to concentrate on their mission. Landing on Europa goes well apart from the fact they missed their planned landing spot for about 100 meters. Their only option is to leave the ship and try to gather the samples from planned spot, but this is risky since anyone, even in the space suit, would be exposed to deadly radiation. During the preparations Blok sees some strange light outside the ship, but when he grabs the camera the light disappears. Katya Petrovna volunteers to get out and gather the samples, but then something strange begins to happen.
One of the scifi movies that tries to keep close to scientific reality - we donít have here teleports, laser weapons or magical sensors that detect Mr Spock from miles away. What happens aboard the ship is shown as footage from the internal cameras, which creates the impression of confined space and shows how difficult it must be to spend long months without any privacy. Unfortunately towards the end the realism is not enough to keep the viewers interesting and when something should have begun to happen... the film more or less ends, which is a shame. If some of the scenes aboard the ship were removed and more elements of surface would be presented the film would only gain on value. Overall good approach to almost forgot scifi in which sci still stands for science, but the script was rather disappointing.
