When global war made the surface of the Earth inhabitable people have chosen the underground City of Ember as their new home. Hidden deep the city is dependable on the old generator that lately had increasing problems and caused several black-outs. And when you have no natural light black-out means you are helpless. When the war broke out the creators of the City of Ember have closed the important message to people of the future, but for some reason they locked it inside a special box that will open automatically 200 years later. The box was passed from generation to generation and each mayor of the city was keeping it safe... until one of them misplaced it. Now, when 200 years are nearly over the box will open, but there is no one that remembers about the box. Young people are about to finish the school and on special ceremony they will draw their assignments. The city depends on the continuity of the services that are not glamorous, like taking care of plumbing or the generator, but they are vital to the survival of the whole community. Young girl, Lina Mayfleet, is given the plumbing assignment, not the one she was hoping for, but she managed to swap with Doon Harrow and now she will be the proud messenger rushing through the city with important messages... and those not that important to be honest. She is also descendant of one of the former mayors, and soon she stumbles upon a mystery box.
Sci-fi film based on the Jeanne DuPrau novel (one of the Book of Ember series) had the potential to be quite interesting production - the studio was hoping to make films from each of the novels (what a surprise!), but City of Ember was a financial flop and stopped the production of further titles. While the cast was rather good, the production was made with impressive effort (whole city was built for the movie) the story itself was far too simple to attract many viewers and the whole film is rather forgettable.
