40 years after the events that took place in UFO: Enemy Unknown second wave of the alien invasion has begun. But this time the flying saucers are no longer their primary crafts - this time they use technology that allows them to submerge under the ocean and build bases under the water. We start from the scratch - building the first base, using basic equipment and learning how to deal with the invaders. Our weapons and crafts have also changed - instead of flying vehicles we have submarines that are able to fly as well (strange combination) and use weapons that can be used under the water. And that’s where the logic ends in X-COM: Terror from the Deep.
Basically the game is simple copy of UFO: Enemy Unknown, the equipment was switched from flying interceptors and transport crafts to those who cas submerge under the water, the creators didn’t even bother to limit the movement of the submarines only to water, so they can also fly over the land. The mission part of the game is identical to previous one, only details of the surroundings have changed to simulate how the bottom of the ocean would look like, but everything else is identical, which is silly. Instead of swimming our soldiers simply walk on the bottom of the ocean, they have unlimited oxygen supply, they have similar weapons, only the visual side have slightly changed.
The aliens themselves are also different - completely new species with different skills, different weapons, different technology (although each part of it suspiciously reminds those from Enemy Unknown), again they use terror strikes as a method, their spaceships are very similar to the old ones.
In general the game is only a copy with slight changes to graphic side and some alterations to technology and alien species, but the basics of the game are identical to those in UFO: Enemy Unknown. Still the game was well received after the premiere, even though it was rushed project that has very little new to offer comparing to the predecessor.

The team that created UFO: Enemy Unknown have moved to design X-COM: Apocalypse, while production of X-COM: Terror from the Deep was left to another team that did not brought much to the game. |
