Rescue on Fractalus! is a scifi themed flight simulator that takes place on the mission to alien galactic - while Earth spaceship takes the orbit over rocky planet of Fractalus some of the early waves of fighters were shot down by the enemy defense. The alien race (called Jaggi, hence the early draft title of the game Behind Jaggi Lines!) has installed laser guns on the tops of the mountains that damaged the fighters and even though the pilots have survived due to planet’s dense and toxic atmosphere they are stuck on the enemy territory. And at that point we enter the story - aboard the spaceship we take control of Valkyrie-class fighter and we descent onto the planet in search and rescue mission to pick up the pilots that survived. Their fighters are sending the location signals, so from short range we can pick up their position and land close enough that their space suits would survive short run to our fighter.
During the flight we have to watch out for the laser guns on the mountains and flashing discs that are some form of the homing missiles and can damage the fighter. Even on the ground we are not 100% safe - while most of the time we will just switch off the shields and wait for the pilot to knock on the airlift door to be let inside, but from time to time (on the higher levels) the shot down fighters might hide an alien inside. When we pick up enough pilots we can leave the atmosphere and return to our spaceship.
Rescue on Fractalus! is actually rather simple game, but since the creators used the fractals to generate the surface of the planet we are searching for the pilots in deep gorges between high mountains. With constant thread from enemy we have to complete the mission and move up to higher level. With hardware limitations it is still quite impressive game that can be fun to play.
