After the nuclear war in 2013 the Moscow was left in ruins. The survivors of the holocaust, most of which were underground when the bombs have exploded, are forced to live in the only safe place - the city metro system. Due to supply shortage their existance is sad and depressing - stuck in dark corridors of the subway stations their only hope is that some day they will have chance to go walk on surface again. Only the bravest of them, called stalkers, ever wander into what has left of Moscow and look for useful items, but they risk not only death from radiation or suffocation - the surface is full of mutated and deadly creatures.
Artyom, young man living his whole life under the ground, dreams about seeing the sky. When mysterious creatures, called the Dark Ones, are threatening the metro station VDNKh where he lives, veteran Hunter takes him along on a journey to Polis station, where they can seek help to protect other people in the VDNKh. They set out into the darkness of the tunnels hoping to get in time to Polis.
The setting in metro tunnels creates unique experience when we have to deal with deadly creatures in almost total darkness, but the world created by Glukhovsky has a rough beauty to it. Unfortunately the lack of element of discovery makes Metro 2033 rather unlike to be re-played again - even when we are on the surface we are limited by the need to use gas masks with filters that last a very short period of time.
Nice twist for FPS game (first person shooter) is that in the world of Metro 2033 ammo is used as currency, so we have to take under consideration each bullet we are firing. Only on the stations we can buy ammo, weapons or supplies and since not every journey through the tunnels goes as simple as it may seem we always need to have some extra supplies with us. Also most of the weapons are improvised guns created from parts that were available for the subway gunsmiths, so they are not what you can see in other productions.
First person shooter set in sci fi reality taken from Metro 2033 novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky. In many ways the novel and the game were influenced by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and the Roadside Picnic novel, but contrary to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games we have here linear story and very limited world to explore. Since most of the time we are in the underground tunnels it is quite understandable, but on the other hand there is literally only one way to get through the game - not even once (until the last scene) we can choose a single door or single tunnel other than the one that is leading to next part of the story.
