Ten years after the events of Fallout 3 we step out of the vault 111 near Boston into the reality that was left after the nuclear war. The main character, Sole Survivor, looks for son Shaun that was kidnapped some years earlier. Like in previous games we are put in the open world to explore and dark secrets to uncover. The post-apocalyptic world is full of survivors, who are split in to factions or just try to stay alive in the mutant infested reality.
While the game offered improved graphics, a lot of elements taken from mods to Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas (like chance to build our own settlement or modify the weapons), at the same time Fallout 4 reduced the dialog options (so they could be operated on game consoles), searching options (we see the inventory of box or trashcan without looking inside) and worst of all reduced the choices of main character. In Fallout 3 it was completely up to player if he wants to do good or bad, each decision might have the influence on future parts of the story, karma was important factor in our journey. In Fallout 4 our only way to advance is by doing good things, which at some points proved to be a dull and unfulfilling (like endless missions to help settlements under attack).
The atmosphere was similar to previous titles - a bit gloomy, full of dark mysteries - but at the same time something was missing and the game seemed to lack depth. For example the first thing we stumble upon is a suit of armor, a luxury that was hard to get in Fallout 3, first enemy we stumble upon is a deathclaw, the most dangerous predator in previous games. The area we are searching is full of people, the existing factions are more sophisticated than in previous games, but unfortunately those changes made great difference to Fallout 4 and not in a good way.
Although Fallout 4 was huge financial success and in many ways was superior to Fallout 3 the final product was somehow disappointment to players - yes, it was the continuation, yes, there were more options to fiddle with, yes, there were again Lovecraft-like mysteries around, but the simplifications made to suit the game console players made the game lost its spirit and as we can see through Fallout Shelter and Fallout 76 it marked the peak of Fallout games.
